COMPLETION

1999 – 2012

In an invited competition, a comprehensive construction system for petrol stations was successfully proposed. In the course of the realisation of the new building at Fürstenrieder Strasse 172, the system was concretised and refined for further new buildings.

The principle is based on: a three-dimensional planning grid of a steel skeleton building, which is related to the requirements of vehicle movement, technology and spatial planning; a continuous roof with a centrally located skylight strip made of ETFE cushions; an attractively bright and clear appearance; passive and active measures for energetically optimised spatial comfort; and an embedding of the urban and green design in the surroundings. For the ETFE tyre cushions of the roof, project specific lifting, folding and sun shading devices were developed.

Since 2000 seven new buildings based on this concept have been realized as well as a number of reconstructions and preliminary and input-planning for further locations. The newly built and reconstructed petrol stations have set a new and pioneering standard for this type of construction task, the modular character being of great advantage especially in the case of extension and reconstruction or with respect to necessary adaptions to the conditions of the specific building site. Looking back at 1999 the expectations of the client were met regarding the organization of operational procedures, flexibility of the system regarding building and maintenance, employee satisfaction, customer loyalty and public image. The principle has proven its practical advantage up to this day and has been a success story for building owners and architects.

The completed objects were widely published and awarded, repeatedly featured in the architectural tour ’Architektouren’ of the Bayerische Architektenkammer (Association of Bavarian Architects) 2014 and  included as a sample application in the Neufert Bauentwurfslehre.
